Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I read my own X-rays. Why do I need PetRays?

A: Veterinary specialists spend 3 or 4 years in advanced training to master their specialty. Even the most skilled veterinarians reading X-rays will have errors of omission and errors of misdiagnosis. Often times, an X-ray believed to be normal is later determined to be abnormal. Many of the errors are significant and can dramatically affect patient outcome. PetRays’ specialists can help reduce misdiagnosis and improve the quality of care and follow-up for all patients in your practice.

Q: How will PetRays benefit my practice?

A: By partnering with PetRays, you have access to a team of veterinary specialists in fields ranging from radiology and cardiology, to neurology and oncology. Partnering with PetRays is like having 24-hour access to a major veterinary referral center.

Q: I don’t have the right equipment and can’t afford it. How do I use your service?

A: In most cases, PetRays can work with whatever equipment you currently have in place. Contact PetRays today and our support team can review your system to determine how best to support your practice. Typically, we can set up your clinic in 30 minutes or less.

Q: What equipment do I need to get started?

A: If you have Internet access and digital radiography, we can set up your clinic in 30 minutes or less. If you have non-digital, plain X-rays, one of our support team members will be able to assist you.

Q: Should I wait until my CR or DR system is installed before I use your service?

A: We can provide you with the necessary instructions and software to start taking advantage of our services today, at no additional expense. When the DR or CR is finally installed, our technical team will configure the connection to our system and ensure your images transmit properly and in a timely manner.

Q: I currently use a similar service. How do I switch to PetRays?

A: If you currently send your X-rays and imaging studies out for interpretation, then you are most likely ready to send to PetRays as well. Our technical team will determine exactly what is needed. Chances are you can benefit from PetRays’ service within 30 minutes or less. Contact us now to get started.

Q: What are your consultation fees?

A: For a full list of our consultation fees and hours of coverage, please download this PDF.

Q: I have a medium-sized practice. How can I afford PetRays’ services?

PetRays’ veterinary teleradiology service is no different than human teleradiology services. The cost of the consult is a pass-through expense paid by the patient. There are no increased costs to the clinic or hospital. We have found that most pet owners find comfort in knowing that their pet is getting the highest quality care possible. The modest interpretation fees are a small part of the overall cost of the visit for their beloved pet.

Q: What are the hours of coverage?

A: Typically, our specialists are available 24/7/365, but some specialties have specific hours of availability. Please download our Fee Schedule for hours of coverage, turnaround times and fees.

Q: Does PetRays provide specialty consultations?

A: Yes! Consults are available for the following specialties:

  • Radiology
  • Cardiology
  • Dentistry
  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Surgery
  • Anesthesiology

With our STAT service, our specialists can interpret your X-rays and imaging studies and prepare final reports and recommendations in one hour for radiology exams. Often, we deliver reports in less than an hour, except during peak times. For cardiology and small animal internal medicine cases, we can usually deliver results in under an hour.

Q: What is the training and education level of your specialists?

A: All of our specialists have completed at least a three-year residency in their respective fields. Many of our specialists are actively involved in resident education and participate in national and international speaking engagements. Others have been published in leading veterinary medical journals and have authored widely used veterinary textbooks.

Q: Can we advertise that we partner with PetRays?

A: Of course! When you consult with the specialists at PetRays, you are improving both patient care and your practice’s image. Advertising this partnership to the local community may set you apart from other practices in your area. Direct links to our website are also allowed.

Q: How does PetRays send reports back to my hospital?

A: Our proprietary reporting system is designed specifically for telemedicine. Once an exam request is made, it is immediately prioritized and routed to a PetRays specialist, who evaluates the images and data and completes the report. Then as soon as the record is complete, our system automatically emails the final report back to the ordering veterinarian, clinic or hospital.

Reports can be viewed or retrieved from any computer with Internet access, and can be easily uploaded into any practice management system for your convenience.

Q: Can I access old reports?

A: Yes. We archive all reports for future reference.
