Veterinary Specialty Consultants - Critical Care

Jeffery P. Simmons, DVM, MS, DACVECC

Dr. Jeff Simmons is a Mississippi native, born and raised around Gulfport, MS. He went to the University of Southern Mississippi for his BS in Biology and English. From there, he went to Mississippi State University for his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation, he moved to North Alabama to work in a mixed animal practice. During this time, he decided that his favorite cases were the emergencies and the severely critical patients.

At that time, he decided to try and further his training in those cases. He was accepted into Auburn University's residency program into Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care under Drs. Dougie Macintire and Jim Wohl. During his residency, he also pursued a Master's degree in Biomedical Science. He remained at Auburn as a clinical instructor following the completion of his residency. Following his tenure at Auburn, he accepted a position at Purdue University as a clinical instructor. With the mountains calling, he moved to Denver to start a private practice Critical Care Service. He is currently joining a new specialty hospital in Salt Lake City.

His research interests include renal physiology and pathophysiology, sepsis, shock, and infectious diseases. Beyond veterinary medicine, he is attempting to learn to ski and play ice hockey. Both of these activities are proving quite difficult for a native of the Deep South.
