Veterinary Specialty Consultants - Avian Medicine

Eric Klaphake, DVM, Diplomate ACZS and Diplomate ABVP (Avian)

Dr. Eric Klaphake was born in Nebraska and went to Ripon College for his undergraduate education. He was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 1997. He worked in an all-exotic animal practice for five years and volunteered at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. Dr. Klaphake went on to complete a three year residency at the University of Tennessee in Avian and Zoological Medicine and Surgery. He then moved to Columbus, OH, where he lived for one year and worked at an all-exotic animal practice, performed relief work at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and taught basic biology, human pathophysiology, reptile medicine, and beginning fish medicine.

Dr. Klaphake is a Diplomate of both the American College of Zoological Medicine and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Avian). He is the president of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, a member of the organizing committee for both the College of Pet Exotic Animal Veterinarians and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Certification in Reptilian & Amphibian Practice, and the associate editor for review articles in the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Klaphake currently resides in Bozeman, MT with his wife Jessi and son Xavier Ursus. He works at a small animal/exotic veterinary practice and is the consulting veterinarian for ZooMontana. In his spare time, he volunteers for the Wildlife Conservation Society's Wolverine Abdominal Transponder Placement Project and for coelomic transponder placement in lesser scaup (ducks). He enjoys snowboarding, river rafting, hiking, and wildlife photography.
